Wyoming Drug Rehab and Alcohol Rehabilitation Treatment Centers and Programs

Rates of alcohol abuse in Wyoming have consistently been above the whole country for every age group. Alcohol-related admissions to Wyoming drug and alcohol treatment centers account for over 57% of the total. Wyoming ranks well below the national average when it comes to perception of risk in binge drinking, a sad fact that doubtless contributes to this ongoing problem. Given a choice between drugs and alcohol, most people in Wyoming would say that drinking is a much safer activity than using other substances.

Also of concern to families, health care professionals, and law enforcement is the proliferation of methamphetamine across Wyoming. As seen below, it was the second highest category for admissions to Wyoming rehab centers in 2006, closely followed by marijuana, which is widely available everywhere in the state. It has fallen second to meth as the Wyoming illicit drug of choice, however, bad news for parents, doctors, and addicts alike. Meth is a highly addictive and physically and emotionally destructive drug that is unfortunately easy to manufacture and relatively cheap to buy. Parents should be especially worried. The majority of new meth users are under 25, and over 9% of all Wyoming high school seniors have tried it at least once.

At last count (2006), there were 57 drug and alcohol treatment centers in Wyoming, located around the state. Wyoming rehab facilities, as in most states, are mainly private for-profit or private nonprofit treatment centers. The State of Wyoming owns or operates 13. The “public” vs. “private” options, however, are not as wildly different as some might think. Wyoming residents are fortunate in that 77% of all Wyoming drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers receive some form of public funding and 23 contract their services to health care organizations. This means that most patients in drug and alcohol treatment programs in Wyoming will receive care through one of these facilities.

Every addiction is different, and therefore every patient. While most drug and alcohol programs in Wyoming are administered on an outpatient basis, 16 facilities do offer residential care. This is often the best option for severe addictions or for patients needing to cut down on daily stress during recovery. Treatment modalities will vary from one center to another, but in general patients should look for a combination of detoxification services, whether inpatient or outpatient; counseling, behavior modification therapy, and a good long-term support program.

People with opiate addictions hoping for methadone maintenance will discover that only two Wyoming rehabilitation programs and 13 doctors were certified to administer buprenorphine for opiate addiction as of 2006. Most drug and alcohol treatment facilities in Wyoming and elsewhere simply do not offer opioid programs of this type.

While residents do have fairly broad choices for drug and alcohol treatment in Wyoming, all prospective patients should carefully evaluate their local options and discuss all treatment methodologies with their doctor to find the program most likely to yield a positive outcome for their particular problem.
