Wisconsin Drug Rehab and Alcohol Rehabilitation Treatment Centers and Programs

If perception is reality, than Wisconsin’s ranking among the top 10 states for binge drinking and past month alcohol abuse is certainly a reality derived from the extremely low perception of risk regarding these activities among its citizens. Wisconsin ranks among the worst of all 50 states for perception of danger in alcohol use. Admissions for alcohol treatment to Wisconsin drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers rank well above the national average. It is one of the few states where alcohol admissions have remained fairly static rather than trending steadily downward over the past 15 years.

Per the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the drug threats in Wisconsin vary by region. People in eastern and central Wisconsin are more likely to be at risk from powder and crack cocaine, especially around Milwaukee, while the western part of the state has seen the proliferation of methamphetamine. Marijuana is found everywhere in Wisconsin. Of particular concern to the DEA and families across Wisconsin, however, is the widespread diversion of legal drugs to nonmedical use, especially Ritalin, Oxycontin, Vicodin, and other hydrocodone and oxycodone-base pain and stress relievers. Risk of addiction to these drugs is high, especially when deliberately abused by thrill-seekers hunting the intense “hit” they deliver when used improperly.

Wisconsin drug and alcohol treatment and rehabilitation centers note this worrisome trend in their admissions logs. The rate of admissions for “other opiates” is even higher than for marijuana, nearly half that for alcohol alone. This is not a “big city” problem. Senior citizens are at special risk of abusing prescription painkillers, accidentally or otherwise, while increasing numbers of teens are selling pills to each other for recreational use. Every family with a medicine cabinet could be harboring a potential problem, or sending a loved one to a Wisconsin rehab center.

State of Wisconsin Profile of Drug Indicators
March 2008

There were 290 drug and alcohol treatment and rehabilitation centers in Wisconsin as of 2006, the most recent data year. Of those, 236 were private nonprofit or private for-profit facilities. Thirteen were owned or operated by tribal authorities ministering to Wisconsin’s Native American peoples, and the rest were run by local, state, or federal agencies. The difference between “public” and “private” programs, however, is not as great as some might think. Sixty percent of all Wisconsin rehabilitation facilities receive public funding of some sort, and 196 contract their services to health care organizations. Those who feel that choices for drug and alcohol treatment in Wisconsin are limited are misinformed.

Individuals seeking treatment should, however educate themselves as to the types of care available, as not all programs offered by treatment centers in Wisconsin are the same. Most facilities provide outpatient services of one kind or another; 67 offer residential care. People hoping for methadone treatment are more limited in their options. Just 15 Wisconsin rehab centers offer opioid programs, with just 59 programs certified to administer buprenorphine. Patients looking for specific programs for any addiction may need to look outside the local area, or else consider different treatment modalities.
