New Hampshire’s battles with substance abuse are driven in part by its citizens’ low perception of risk associated with using marijuana and alcohol. The state ranks toward the bottom of the nation with regard to this indicator, which in turn has helped to drive alcohol and illicit drug abuse and dependence in the state above national averages, as reported by New Hampshire drug and alcohol treatment centers.

Heroin and marijuana are particular problems in New Hampshire, accounting for significant proportions of all admissions to New Hampshire rehabilitation facilities. Marijuana is widely grown throughout the state and also smuggled in from Canada down the New England Pipeline for drugs, along with cocaine, heroin and, increasingly, prescription drugs diverted from pharmaceutical use. Depressing numbers of New Hampshire’s young adults have been caught in the addiction trap, beginning with recreational use of such drugs as Oxycontin.
