Nevada Drug Rehab and Alcohol Rehabilitation Treatment Centers and Programs

The wide-open state of Nevada is best known for its casinos, but law enforcement agencies and drug and alcohol treatment centers in Nevada see another side of the Silver State, one in which methamphetamine and alcohol wreak havoc on the state’s citizens. Nevada drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers report some shocking trends that reflect the Drug Enforcement Agency’s assessment of meth as the primary drug found in Nevada. Admissions for methamphetamines top alcohol by a wide margin, which has helped push the percentage of drug-only admissions from 10% in 1995 to 35% in 2006.

Meth is not an urban problem like heroin; typically it is prevalent even in rural areas, where scattered houses and farms make perfect hiding places for meth labs. It is intensely addictive and relatively inexpensive, which accounts for its explosive spread since 1999. Drug and alcohol rehab facilities in Nevada show it overtaking both alcohol and marijuana as a drug of choice.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA),  December 2008

The 77 drug and alcohol treatment centers in Nevada admitted over 10,000 patients in 2006, the most recent year for which data is available. That was about 1/5 of all residents reporting needing help for substance abuse in Nevada and not receiving it. Doubtless many refused treatment; others did not know where to begin looking, or believed “rehab” facilities in Nevada or elsewhere are too expensive. However, of those 77 facilities, 65% receive public funds of some type, whether local, state, or federal, which makes them broadly available to Nevada citizens. Five of them were owned by tribal governments for the benefit of the many Native Americans in Nevada, and nine were publicly owned by the state. Many of the 63 private nonprofit and private for-profit rehabilitation centers in Nevada contract their services to hospitals or other care organizations as well, so choices for drug and alcohol treatment in Nevada are by no means limited.

Residents seeking treatment for substance abuse in Nevada, however, should educate themselves as to the local options. Not all programs are the same, and not all facilities offer the same type of services. The majority of rehab centers in Nevada provide services on an outpatient basis. People desiring residential care can choose from among the 15 facilities that offer it, or look out of state.

For those suffering from opiate addictions, such as to heroin or any of the many prescription painkillers like Oxycontin being abused in Nevada, treatment options may be limited. Just nine facilities offer opioid treatment programs, in which methadone or buprenorphine is used during recovery, and only 56 physicians in the whole state were certified to administer buprenorphine as of 2006. It may be necessary for some patients to look outside the local community to find the sort of program best suited to their addiction.

Given the variety of treatment modalities and types of drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers in Nevada, patients would do well to discuss all options with their doctor before beginning treatment.
