Nebraska Drug Rehab and Alcohol Rehabilitation Treatment Centers and Programs

Located in the heart of the American Midwest, Nebraska shares a Midwestern problem: methamphetamine. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) ranks meth as the primary drug of concern in Nebraska, accounting for over 9% of all admissions to Nebraska drug and alcohol treatment centers in 2007. It was second only to alcohol, which accounted for an astonishing 75% of all admissions either as a primary or secondary substance. Alcohol is, in fact, the biggest substance abuse problem in Nebraska, which ranks among the top 10 states in the country for binge drinking and alcohol dependency.

Contributing to these dismal statistics is a perception among Nebraskans that using alcohol is fairly low risk. Just 36% of Nebraskans of all ages see binge drinking as a high-risk activity. All age groups are likewise affected. Parents of Nebraska teens are as likely to find themselves hunting the services of a drug and alcohol recovery center in Nebraska as adults waking up to a substance abuse problem.

For residents of Nebraska, drug and alcohol treatment and rehabilitation centers scattered around the state offer hope for substance abuse problems. There were, as of 2006, 107 such treatment centers in Nebraska, including four owned by tribal governments. Fifteen were state-owned, and the rest were private nonprofit or private for-profit facilities. However, even these private facilities are widely available to Nebraska residents, owing to the fact that 68% receive some type of public funding, and over half provide services to hospitals and other organizations.

Nebraska ranks below the national average in the number of people needing but not receiving treatment for substance abuse. Prospective patients have a choice of treatment modalities and facilities, but should nevertheless educate themselves on the various options. Seventy-eight percent of all Nebraska rehab centers provide outpatient services; another 40 offer residential care. Many patients do better in residential programs, but good outcomes have been achieved through many approaches to treatment. People with opiate addictions hoping for a methodone or buprenorphine program, however, should be aware that only one drug and alcohol treatment facility in Nebraska offered an opioid program as of 2006, and only 22 doctors statewide were certified to administer buprenorphine. Finding a particular treatment program of the type desired may mean looking outside the local community.

All victims of substance abuse should seek treatment as early as possible. Teens are at special risk of developing dependency, especially when exposed to drugs or alcohol before the age of 14. Nearly all Nebraska rehabilitation centers offer screening and evaluation services to determine the type and severity of abuse, and can refer patients to the next step, whether that is inpatient or outpatient detoxification, short-term hospitalization or long-term residential care. Meth and alcohol both have nasty and permanent effects on the body. A successful drug and alcohol treatment program can prevent abuse from sparking lifelong problems.
