California Drug Rehab and Alcohol Rehabilitation Treatment Centers and Programs

The state of drug and alcohol treatment in California shows some ugly trends. Rates of abuse for adults over 26 remain well above the national average, in the top 10 of all states, in fact. Even worse, the shift from alcohol to drugs as the substance most abused has taken an alarming turn toward methamphetamine, which is both physically destructive and creates extreme emotional dependency that wreaks havoc on lives, social networks and relationships.

Admissions to California drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers have climbed steadily year over year, from around 154,000 in 2002 to 194,000 in 2006, the most recent data year.  Fewer than 10% of all admissions were for alcohol alone. A staggering 36%, highest in the nation, were for meth, highlighting the rampant spread of this drug and the fact that addicts cannot hope to beat it on their own.

People seeking drug and alcohol treatment in California have a huge choice of facilities, some 1,820 recognized by the state as of 2006. Over 1,100 of these receive some form of local, state, or federal funding, and a quarter of them contract their services to hospitals and other organizations, expanding their availability to residents. Over 400 were private for-profit facilities, which often provide a mixture of outpatient and residential care.

As in all states, California treatment centers vary widely in the scope of services offered and their experience or qualifications to treat specific problems. Addictions for heroin and other opiates comprise significant percentages of all admissions to California drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities, yet not all treatment centers in California are certified to administer certain medications to treat opiate addictions. Only 921 physicians statewide in 2006 could offer buprenorphine, and only 132 facilities had methadone programs, which are widely used for heroin, cocaine, and other drug addictions. Families should take care to check that local treatment facilities offer the type of programs and the mix of services required to produce the best possible outcome for their particular problem.

About 9% of patients in California rehab centers in 2006 were under the age of 18. Modern parents, especially in trendy, fun-loving California, should educate themselves regarding the rampant threats invading school campuses across the state. A staggering 62% of California 12th graders had tried marijuana as of 2006; an even more alarming 45% of 11th graders had used an illegal drug. The odds of a California child ending up in a drug or alcohol rehab center are exponentially greater than in states where these statistics are much lower. Nationwide studies show that the younger a person is exposed to drugs and alcohol, the higher the risk of eventual dependency.

Such sad statistics point up the need for constant vigilance and early identification of substance abuse. Treatment in California, because of the state’s long war with drugs, is wider-spread than in many other states. Citizens are not limited to purely local options, and therefore do not have to settle for detoxification alone, or a counseling program, or a support group. Comprehensive and effective treatment includes all of these, along with behavior modification, to get the addict clean and sober and prevent relapse. The nearly 2,000 California treatment centers offer hope of finding the right program.
